This week, I want to know who is ultimately accountable for the nation’s critical infrastructure cybersecurity. Is it the federal government or the private companies that own and operate the majority of that infrastructure?

On March 6, I caught up with Phyllis Schneck, the newly appointed deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, and Patrick Gallagher, director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, at a conference in Washington, D.C. They offered some interesting observations about the threat in cyberspace and why they think the voluntary NIST cybersecurity framework is such a good idea.
