Sylvia Burns
Chief Information Officer, Department of the Interior
Sylvia Burns has been chief information officer at the U.S. Department of the Interior since August 2014, overseeing the tech systems that power the agency’s conservation and management mission. She’s had an especially busy past year — from moving her 120-strong team of employees into a beautiful open office space on the 7th floor of the agency’s building on C Street to working on various projects with the CIO Council. Burns told FedScoop she feels “lucky” to work as a woman in tech. She comes to the CIO role with a background more in management and business than in technology, and says that her “special sauce” as a leader is her ability to translate between the technical side and the business side. “Overall I feel like I’ve been embraced wherever I’ve gone,” Burns told FedScoop.
