The Department of Defense is cutting the number of days civilian employees will be furloughed as a result of sequestration from 22 to 14 because of the government-funding bill signed into law Tuesday, according to multiple media reports.
That bill includes an extra $10 billion for the Pentagon’s operations and maintenance accounts to help soften the blow of sequestration, allowing for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to make the reduction.

The Pentagon initially planned to furlough employees one day per week starting in mid-April for 22 consecutive weeks. Furloughs will now be pushed back until June.
Officials said that civilian furloughs would save the department between $4 billion to $5 billion in the current fiscal year.
