Department of the Interior Chief Information Officer Bernard Mazer outlined the department’s accomplishments the past year in a blog post on CIO.gov.
According to Mazer, Interior has:
- Delivered the IT Transformation Strategic Plan to Secretary Salazar
- Established seven High Priority IT Service Areas for immediate modernization
- Selected bureau IT leaders (Assistant Director of Information Resources – ADIRs) to lead each High Priority IT Service Area
- Completed the first round of Quick Wins, including a strategy for mobile device management
- Created opportunities for employee involvement through many volunteer positions
Going forward, Mazer said the department will focus on:
- Delivering a detailed Implementation Plan to Secretary Salazar by the end of December 2011
- Finalizing analysis of the IT workforce, with support from OPM
- Continuing to work towards a single email system for the entire Department (new system expected to be announced in spring 2012)
“As we enter the second year of IT Transformation, I’ve directed my team to make even more progress,” Mazer wrote. “The Implementation Plan I’m delivering at the end of the month will provide specific directions for my team to follow over the next few years. This plan will be a cornerstone for IT Transformation and I look forward to sharing them after they have been reviewed by the Secretary.”
He continued, “Looking back over the past year, I see that our planning efforts and changes to our organizational structure have provided a solid foundation for IT Transformation. As we make these changes, we will continue minimizing adverse impacts and maximizing career building opportunities for IT employees and continuing to provide the IT services DOI employees need to support their mission areas. 2012 will be an exciting year for DOI’s IT Transformation and I’ll continue to share our progress as we move forward.”
