GSA begins hunt for new tech commissioner
The General Services Administration posted an opening Monday on USAJobs.gov for the next commissioner to lead its newly formed Technology Transformation Service.
The new commissioner — set to replace TTS’ first commissioner Phaedra Chrousos, whose last day at GSA is Friday — will be charged with helping the service scale in the coming years.
“This next step in the service’s evolution is the need for a seasoned executive — commissioner 2.0, if you will — that can take an organization that’s purposefully experimental and, based on all of the information we’ve gathered about what the government needs, further focus the organization’s resources on the products and services that have the highest impact on the government’s digital movement and generate the greatest savings for the American taxpayer,” Chrousos told FedScoop in a recent exit interview. “And they need to do this while navigating the government’s very unique obstacle course.”
According to the posting, the new commissioner will be a senior executive service member tasked with planning, directing, overseeing and coordinating among TTS programs — 18F, the Presidential Innovation Fellows, and the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies — “to maximize their contribution to the Federal government’s ability to serve the public,” along with implementing a system for performance tracking, developing an annual budget and long-term financial plans, and represent the agency and its administrator “on all TTS activities as they relate to the way the government builds, buys, and shares technology.”
“Improving technology services is one of the federal government’s biggest shared challenges,” GSA Administrator Denise Turner Roth said in a statement. “The Technology Transformation Service will play a critical role in helping agencies create the most accessible, efficient, user-centered and secure technology for the citizens we serve. The TTS commissioner will be key to achieving this goal.”
The position will pay between $123,175 and $185,100. The posting is open until July 25.
