DISA OKs 23 cloud platforms to hold least-sensitive data

The Defense Information Systems Agency approved a number of FedRAMP-certified cloud providers, allowing the Defense Department to use them for storing the least-sensitive data permitted by the agency.

The number of cloud service providers cleared to work with the Defense Department widely expanded Monday. DISA announced that 23 cloud platforms have been given provisional authority to operate and are cleared to hold the least-sensitive level of Defense information.

The announcement comes after Defense Information Systems Agency CIO David Bennett made it clear last August that DOD would look for ways to use the commercial cloud within its own systems.

The department’s least-sensitive data, designated as Impact Level 2, includes all data cleared for public release, as well as some private unclassified information that requires a minimal level of access control.

Every provider cleared for use by DISA has passed the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program’s moderate baseline and previously has been granted either a FedRAMP Joint Authorization Board provisional authorization, or JAB PA, or a FedRAMP Agency authority to operate, or ATO.

“The granting of these provisional authorizations is an important step in our strategy to drive cost down by moving more of our mission data to the cloud,” Terry Halvorsen, DOD chief information officer, said in a release.

In order to hold data at levels beyond Impact Level 2, cloud service providers will have to go through DISA’s own security standards. Amazon Web Services was the first commercial provider allowed to hold data above Impact Level 2.
