The Defense Department on Friday appointed David DeVries to the post of acting chief information officer, a Pentagon spokesman confirmed. He takes over while the department searches for a permanent replacement for former CIO Teri Takai, whose last day was May 2.
DeVries joined DOD’s CIO office in 2009 as the deputy CIO for information enterprise. He has been deeply involved in helping DOD move to the Joint Information Enterprise based on a single, secure and reliable enterprisewide IT architecture.
DeVries has also been a key player in the effort to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs’ electronic health record exchange capability and of the oversight of the department’s overall IT plans.
Takai, who announced her departure in April, served her last day as DOD CIO on May 2. She served as the Pentagon’s CIO since 2010. The post is one of the most demanding in government, involving the day-to-day operations of a $38+ billion IT budget.
