Census Begins Move to Virtual Work Environment; CIO McGrath on Mobility, Productivity, Telework
The U.S. Census Bureau is in the initial deployment phase for a virtual desktop infrastructure that will allow agency employees to have a common experience whether they are working at agency headquarters, a regional office or from home.
Census Chief Information Officer Brian McGrath sat down with FedScoop to discuss the initiative, along with the agency’s efforts in the cloud computing space.
“We like the idea of the mobility VDI gives us,” McGrath said.
McGrath said virtualization was the best mechanism for efficient access and the security aspects, where all of the agency’s information stayed in an “ultra-secure” data center, allowing them to create the mobile workforce they were looking for.
Going forward, McGrath said it’s important for the agency to allow its workforce to use “any device, anywhere” to help recruit the next generation of workforce that is more inclined to work from a smaller handheld device or thin client than a personal computer or laptop.
