Air Force CIO Shwedo promoted to Joint Staff CIO
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced Wednesday that the president has selected Lt. Gen. Bradford “B.J.” Shwedo as CIO of the Joint Staff.
Shwedo, who has served as CIO of the Air Force since June 2017, will take over as director for command, control, communications, and computers/cyber (C4) and CIO (J6) for the Joint Staff — a group in the Pentagon with personnel from each of the five military services designated to assist the Joint Chiefs of Staff with their duties.
He will replace Coast Guard Vice Adm. Marshall B. Lytle, who served earlier in his career as commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Cyber Command.
According to an explanation of the Joint Staff J6/CIO role, the office “represents the Joint Warfighter in support of the command, control, communications, and computers/cyber (C4) requirements validation and capability development processes while ensuring joint interoperability” and “provides business class Information Technology (IT) services and support to the Chairman and the entire Joint Staff.”
Prior to his appointment as Air Force CIO, Shwedo served as commander of the 25th Air Force at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, which delivers “multisource intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance products, applications, capabilities and resources” and “conduct electronic warfare; strategic command and control; and they integrate cyber ISR teams and expertise into the country’s cyber mission forces,” according to his biography.
