Scientists Must Be Empowered, Not Replaced by AI

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) is finalizing a report that underscores the crucial role of human scientists in the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) tools within scientific research. This initiative follows a unanimous vote by the council during a public discussion on Tuesday, aligning with a directive from President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI.

The report is part of an effort to explore AI’s potential in addressing significant societal and global challenges. It will offer recommendations on integrating AI assistance into scientific workflows, ensuring responsible and transparent use of AI throughout the research process. Furthermore, the document will advocate for expanded data research programs at the NSF and the Census Bureau and propose full funding for the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource to facilitate ambitious future projects.
