Danny Werfel on How Automation has Enhanced his Agency’s Operations.

At the recent UIPath on Tour public sector event held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington DC, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel discussed the pivotal role of automation in enhancing IRS operations. Werfel emphasized the agency’s focus on leveraging artificial intelligence to improve taxpayer services starting in 2024. Utilizing funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS aims to continue modernizing its systems through AI.

Werfel highlighted that while taxpayers currently interact with the IRS via paper, in-person centers, and phone, AI integration will streamline these interactions, allowing taxpayers to quickly obtain answers to common questions online without delays. Furthermore, AI will enhance automated efficiency within the IRS, reducing errors and bolstering the integrity of the tax system. This technology will enable targeted auditing of corporations and wealthy individuals most in need of scrutiny, thereby sparing compliant parties from unnecessary audits.
