Rebecca Piazza first joined the General Services Administration’s 18F tech consultant group in April 2015 as a product manager, working her way up to head of product and then deputy director. The best career advice she’s ever received, she told FedScoop, is that “the work” is only really part of what matters. “It’s important to deliver a high-quality product or service, but that’s only part of what makes your project, organization, or yourself successful,” Piazza said. “You also need to invest time in building relationships, storytelling, advocacy, people development, and connecting with your users and stakeholders. Heads-down, hands-on-keyboard work is important but not enough. It’s the other intangible activities that create the conditions for success.”
