The White House launched the Big Data Research and Development Initiative on Thursday where six federal departments and agencies will pledge more than $200 million in commitments to improve the tools and techniques needed to access, organize and make discoveries in large volumes of data.
“We also want to challenge industry, research universities, and non-profits to join with the Administration to make the most of the opportunities created by Big Data,” wrote White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Deputy Director for Policy Tom Kalil. “Clearly, the government can’t do this on its own. We need what the President calls an ‘all hands on deck’ effort.”
The initiative aims to help accelerate the pace of discovery in science and engineering, strengthen our national security and transform teaching and learning, Kalil said.
The White House released the following fact sheet that goes into more detail in the types of investments the different federal agencies will make as part of the initiative.
